Richard Rodgers

(1902-80) Compositor estadounidense, n. y m. en Nueva York. Ingresado en 1918 en la Universidad de Columbia, conoció allí a Lorenz Hart, libretista de su primer espectáculo musical, Fly with Me. Con ese mismo colaborador realizaría sus revistas musicales The Garrick Gaieties (1925), On Your Toes (1936) y el ballet con música de jazz titulado Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, cuya coreografía corrió a cargo de Balanchine. A la muerte de Hart en 1942, Rodgers tomó a Oscar Hammerstein como libretista y con él alcanzó grandes éxitos con comedias como Oklahoma! (1943) y South Pacific (1949), que tendrían sus correspondientes versiones cinematográficas. Uno de sus triunfos musicales, The Sound of Music (1959), le valió en 1965 un Oscar a su adaptador cinematográfico Robert Wise. El filme, conocido en español con el título de Sonrisas y lágrimas, gozó del favor popular.
